The ability to read music notation is an invaluable skill for any musician. While it is true that many successful and talented musicians did not read music, the benefits that come from and ability to read and understand music notation make it a more than worthwhile pursuit. Consider what it would be like being a writer without knowing how to read or write. The ability to read and write music notation means being able play music you may have never heard before (and, in fact, may have never been heard before) and to record you own musical ideas and communicate those ideas to other people in a clearly defined way, even when you don’t speak the same language.
The ability to read and write music is a wonderful gift, the benefits of which far outweighing the effort required to learn this invaluable skill.
